Varvara Marazioti holds a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Archaeology and History of Art from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Conservation of Antiquities and Works of Art from the University of West Attica, graduating with distinction. She pursued a Master of Science (MSc) in Conservation Studies at the University College London (Qatar), where she was awarded a fully funded Master’s scholarshi.

Varvara completed her PhD in the Department of Conservation of Antiquities and Works of Art at the University of West Attica, supported by a prestigious three-year scholarship from the Special Research Fund Account (UniWA). Her PhD thesis, titled “Research on chemical characterisation, degradation, and removal of overpaintings from contemporary murals,” highlights her commitment to advancing conservation science. Her research is multifaceted, encompassing the chemical characterization of artists’ spray paints through various analytical techniques, investigations into the mechanisms of ageing, and the innovative application of nanotechnology for effective cleaning. She presents her research results in peer-reviewed international journals and conferences.

Varvara’s research interests focus on the study of paints and coatings, with a particular emphasis on the application of eco-friendly materials in cultural heritage conservation. She has experience both as an archaeologist and as a conservator of archaeological materials (ceramics, stone, metals, mosaics), historical objects (architectural elements, metallic objects, wall paintings, and mosaics), and contemporary public artworks (murals and sculptures). Currently, she is a researcher at the CultLab research laboratory.
